Captain Tirrell hails from Hilo, HI. After completing Recruit Training and the Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) program, he attended The George Washington University, earning a B.A. in History. He is a plankowner of the Maritime Space Officer community with a deep background in Cryptologic Warfare.
Prior to reporting to OPNAV N2N6, he served within the Joint Staff J5 – Strategy, Plans, and Policy as the Chief for Cyber, Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations, and Operations in the Information Environment.
Captain Tirrell’s other assignments include duty with the National Security Agency / Naval Security Group Activity – Fort Meade, USS BOXER (LHD-4), Navy Information Operations Command – Colorado, Carrier Strike Group ELEVEN (NIMITZ), U.S. THIRD Fleet, U.S. Central Command, Task Force 1050 / Navy Information Operations Command – Georgia, and the Bureau of Naval Personnel. He has deployed numerous times afloat and ashore, including assignments with the Army in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan.
He is a graduate of the Army Command & General Staff College, holds a M.A. in Procurement & Acquisitions Management, a M.A. in Military Art and Science, and is pursuing a M.S. in Space Systems Operations. Captain Tirrell is a member of the Navy’s Space Cadre, an alumnus of the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS) and has earned the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge.
Captain Tirrell is the recipient of various personal, unit, and campaign awards including the Defense Superior Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal and Meritorious Service Medal.
