Vice Admiral Nils Andreas Stensønes became Director of the Norwegian Intelligence Service on 3 November 2020.

The role of Space Commander within the Norwegian Armed Forces also rests with the Director of the Norwegian Intelligence Service.

In the course of his career, Stensønes has served as Chief of the Royal Norwegian Navy (2017-2020), Deputy Commander Operations at the Norwegian Joint Headquarters (2016-2017), Chief of Staff and Second-in-Command in the Royal Norwegian Navy (2014-2016), and as Force Commander in Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (2014).  In addition to shore and staff assignments in the Navy, Stensønes has also served in the Norwegian Defense Logistics Organization. He has ten years’ operational sea duty on board missile torpedo boats, as second-in-command, captain, division commander and squadron commander.

Stensønes graduated from the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy in 1987 and has since completed a Long Course in the German Navy, courses at the Norwegian Defense Command and Staff College, and the Senior Executive Course at the Norwegian Defense University College.
