Col. James Gutzman

Staff Judge Advocate
U.S. Space Command

Colonel Jimmy Gutzman serves as the Staff Judge Advocate for United States Space Command, the Unified Combatant Command responsible for defending U.S. and Allied interests in the space domain while providing space-enabled combat effects to joint warfighters around the globe.

Col Gutzman entered the Air Force in 1993 and served 17 years as a Satellite Communications Maintainer and Space Operations Officer before transitioning into the Air Force JAG Corps. A four-time Staff Judge Advocate, Col Gutzman was previously the Chief of Space Law, HQ United States Space Force.

Col Gutzman earned a BA from UCLA, a JD from the University of Minnesota, a LLM in Air and Space Law from McGill University, and a Master of Strategic Studies in Space Warfighting from Air War College. He is admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of Minnesota and the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces.

Col Gutzman’s personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air and Space Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air and Space Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters and Army Achievement Medal.

Prior to his current position, Col Gutzman served as Staff Judge Advocate, Space Training and Readiness Command.
