Vice Admiral Nils Andreas Stensønes became Director of the Norwegian Intelligence Service on 3 November 2020.

He graduated from the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy in 1987 and has since completed a Long Course in the German Navy, as well as education at the Norwegian Defense Command and Staff College and the Senior Executive Course at the Norwegian Defense University College.

Vice Admiral Stensønes has ten years of operational sea duty on board missile torpedo boats (FPB), as executive officer, commanding officer, division commander and squadron commander. Later sea duties include Chief of Staff and Commander of the Norwegian Task Group, as well as Commander Standing NATO Maritime Group 1.

Vice Admiral Stensønes worked for one year as Project Manager for the civilian company in FRAMO Engineering, and he has been a member of the board of Sea Hawk Navigation for four years.

Vice Admiral Stensønes has served as Head of the Electronic Warfare Division at the Norwegian Navy Training Establishment, and as Military Assistant to the Chief of Staff of the Royal Norwegian Navy. He has held various positions, including Program Manager for the Norwegian Navy’s Frigate Program, and Chief of Staff in the Norwegian Defense Logistics Organization/ Maritime Capabilities.

Vice Admiral Stensønes served as Deputy Commander for Operations at the Norwegian Joint Headquarters from 2016 to 2017.

He served as Chief of the Royal Norwegian Navy from 2017 to 2020.
