Dr. Heidi B. Hammel

Vice President for Science

Dr. Heidi B. Hammel is the Vice President for Science at the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), which operates world-class astronomical observatories for the US government. She also serves as Vice President of The Planetary Society, which advocates for the advancement of space science and planetary defense. In her 30-year career as a planetary astronomer, her research has touched on many facets of planetary science and astrophysics; most recently, Dr. Hammel served as an Interdisciplinary Scientist advising NASA on science development of the James Webb Space Telescope. She has been profiled by the New York Times, Newsweek Magazine, and Discover Magazine (which identified her in 2002 as one of the 50 most important women in science).  Dr. Hammel has also been lauded for her work in public outreach, including the Sagan Medal for outstanding communication by an active planetary scientist to the general public, the “Spirit of American Women” National Award for encouraging young women to follow non-traditional career paths, and the San Francisco Exploratorium’s Public Understanding of Science Award.  In 2023, NASA recognized Dr. Hammel with an Exceptional Public Service Medal for an exemplary career in service to NASA and to the planetary science community. Asteroid “1981 EC20” has been renamed 3530 Hammel in her honor.
