Dr. Jean-Claude Piedboeuf

Senior Vice President, Space Programs
Canadian Space Agency

Dr. Jean Claude Piedboeuf was appointed Senior Vice President, Space Programs at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) in July 2023.

He holds a Ph.D. in space robotics and began his career with a research fellowship in Munich, Germany, followed by a professorship in mechanical engineering at the Royal Military College in Kingston. In 1996, Dr. Piedboeuf joined the CSA, where he led the newly established robotics group. He played a pivotal role in advancing R&D efforts in collaboration with Canadian industry and international partners, notably contributing to the development of on-orbit robotic servicing concepts.

By 2005, he was leading the CSA team in a landmark international collaboration with 13 space agencies to develop the Global Exploration Roadmap and establish the International Space Exploration Coordination Group (ISECG). Domestically, he spearheaded the creation of the CSA Space Exploration Strategy, and oversaw early development of Canada’s lunar rover fleet and the next-generation Canadarm.

From 2014 to 2018, as Director General of Space Science & Technology, Dr. Piedboeuf led the launch of the Space Capacity Development Program, one of CSA’s three core initiatives supporting Canadian space science and technology.

In 2018, he transitioned to CSA’s corporate leadership, serving as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and later as Vice President, Corporate Strategy and Innovation. In these roles, he championed innovation across CSA’s corporate functions and introduced modern costing methodologies for complex space missions.

As Senior Vice President of Space Programs, Dr. Piedboeuf oversees CSA’s three program branches, managing over 30 projects, satellite operations, space station activities, and the Canadian astronaut program. He represents Canada on the European Space Agency Council and various international forums, advocating for collaborative and innovative approaches with Canadian industry, government departments, and global space agencies.
