Franco Macchia

Technical Director, Digital Transformation (BZED), SSIO Enterprise Interoperability Division (BZE)
Space Systems Command

Franco Macchia graduated from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and California State University, Long Beach, with a Masters of Science in Engineering Management.

Franco Macchia spent four years in flight test at Edwards Air Force Base as an Air Force flight test engineer for C-130s, Parachute Systems, and the Airborne Laser Test Bed.  After his time in the Air Force he took a position at Honeywell Aerospace as project engineer for electro-mechanical actuators used in airplane systems and the International Space Station.  After 3 years at Honeywell Aerospace, Franco moved over to Space and Missile Systems Command (SMC), resuming federal service as a civilian working specifications, standards and systems engineering.  His interest in Digital Engineering (DE) grew and he began working on DE standards and DE methods, such as Model Based Systems Engineering architectures, ontologies and style guides.  He continued his growth in DE by assuming a DE task lead role as an SE&I for one of SMC’s prototype programs, Missile Track Custody.  As he continued to develop expertise and hands-on application of DE, he was recruited back to what is now Space Systems Command (SSC) to be the technical director for the Space Systems Integration Office (SSIO) Digital Engineering / Digital Transformation branch.  In this capacity he is supporting the development of and transition to digital engineering in all areas of the Space Force’s capability development lifecycle; from digital ecosystems, modeling standards and digitized workflows to digital workforce development and training.
