Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory

Mr. John Hicks is currently a Principal Program Manager for The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) and a member of the Principal Professional Staff supporting the National Security Space, with a focus on Space Cyber Security and Tactical Space Domain Awareness.  From August 2017 to May 2022 John was assigned to lead the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Field Office supporting Space Systems Command (SSC), EL Segundo, California.  He was responsible for supporting the delivery, acquisition, development, and sustaining of military space systems and the delivery of resilient and affordable space capabilities.  Previous to his assignment to SSC, John was the Program Manager for both the SSUSI-Lite and SSUSI efforts supporting the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) from 2012-2017 and supported numerous software enhancements and on-orbit upgrades to the SSUSI sensors.

Before joining the Laboratory in July 2006, John held leadership and technical positions with the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) Kansas City Plant from 2002 to 2006.  Prior to NNSA, John was a F-15 Fighter Pilot in the USAF for 21 years.  John received a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy, and a M.S. in Systems Engineering from Golden Gate University.
